If you’re weighing up a half term holiday choice at the moment, and want somewhere that’s genuinely active, genuinely relaxing, and is long-haul but doesn’t eat too much of your seven-night stay with travel time, then Saint Lucia should get some serious consideration. It’s approximately an eight-hour flight from the UK and you’ll get a solid week on the ground, which is more than enough time to properly experience both sides of the island – I promise you, you won’t feel like you’ve barely landed before it’s time to leave.

Why a week works
With a day flight in and a night flight out, you can easily fit your seven-night stay into the week-long half term holiday. And that time on island will easily allow you to explore in full. Split your stay across Saint Lucia’s two distinct sides – an activity packed, lively north paired with the lush green and slower-pace of the south. You can spend a real amount of time in each region without feeling like you’re rushing. Four nights in the north allows for adventurous excursions, lively nights in Rodney Bay and time on/by the ocean. Spending the final three nights in the south offers balance with a relaxing pace. This set up also front-loads the longer transfer on arrival, whilst you have a little more energy; you’ll enjoy the quieter half of the trip, feel fully relaxed and take advantage of a short, hassle free transfer back to the airport for your departure.

The lively north: Rodney Bay
This is where the adventurous side of your trip lives. The Babonneau Rainforest zip-line and aerial tram combines multiple zip lines with canopy walking, spotting hummingbirds and learning about medicinal plants along the way – an excursion that is genuinely enjoyable for all ages, not just the thrill-seekers in the family. A segway tour along the Mount Pimard nature trail is a gentler, beginner-friendly alternative, taking in old military ruins on the way to Reduit Beach, with a rum punch (or fresh fruit, for the kids) waiting at the end.
Beyond the activities, a day trip into Castries for the traditional market, dinner at Coal Pot on the harbour, and lazy afternoons at Pigeon Island round out the north nicely. For families specifically, Windjammer Landing Resort & Residences stands out as the strongest base here.

The lush south: Soufrière
The pace changes entirely once you move south. Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort set between the Pitons with private plunge pools, is about as close to postcard-perfect as it gets, and the rainforest spa here is a genuine highlight if you can grab an hour to yourselves. This is Sulphur Springs territory too, and for older kids or more adventurous families, the Gros Piton hike is an option worth knowing about – though it’s an intermediate hike (2,619 feet above sea level, and a several hour round trip), not a casual walk, so be honest about fitness levels before committing the whole family to it.

A note on timing
Saint Lucia’s most reliable dry-season window runs December through to April, so October sits just outside of that. But, don’t let it put you off a visit. Tropical destinations see rain year round and whilst you’re still firmly in the Caribbean’s wetter stretch, poor weather is often short lived. Plus, adventuring in the rain does add a little something to exploring, particularly in the rainforest. Possible poor weather shouldn’t rule this island out a for half term adventure: temperatures stay warm, rain tends to come in short bursts rather than settling in, and prices are typically kinder on the pocket when you travel outside of peak season. Just make sure to pack accordingly.
Is it worth it for half term?
For a family wanting genuine activity, higher temperatures than we often find in Europe at the same time of year, and a bit of cultural flair, Saint Lucia is a great option. And you can get there without sacrificing your downtime to travelling – the reasonable flight time does not dominate the trip. Saint Lucia’s twin-centre approach also means nobody has to choose between an adventure holiday and a beach holiday; you simply get both.
