St Kitts is small, relaxed and easy to love, and it’s the island I’d steer a Caribbean first-timer towards if they want authenticity with a chilled, calming vibe over an in-your-face party atmosphere.
This is how I’d plan a first visit, including how long to stay, where to base yourself, great places to eat and the day trips worth making time for.
If you’re still deciding between islands, my Saint Lucia or St Kitts post will help with your decision.
How long to stay
I tell everyone that seven nights in the Caribbean should be the minimum. Fewer nights can work, and I’ve travelled for five nights many times, but for a holiday I’d always make it seven. And when you consider the eight-hour flight time from the UK, this length of stay will allow you to pack in so much. You’ll have time to fully explore the island and leave with a true understanding of the island.
If you’d like to see exactly what you can fit into a seven-night stay, my 7-night itinerary shows how I’d spend a week in St Kitts.
Where to stay: Frigate Bay
If you’re a first-time visitor to St Kitts, I’d base yourself in Frigate Bay. It’s near the beach, close to the buzzing strip and has several great hotels that can cater to differing budgets.
- St Kitts Marriott Beach Resort, Casino & Spa: one of the bigger resort options and a great choice for families, this resort is an all-rounder. It’s spacious, with a great pool, beach access, and you have a choice of eight restaurants and bars, a fab spa and can use the casino if you choose to.
- Royal St Kitts Hotel: a great middle-budget choice, Royal St Kitts sits directly opposite the Marriott. A smaller property but still with all the facilities you need, guests can access standard rooms, completely self-contained studios with kitchenette for a more self-catering stay, or the newer villa-style accommodation sits at the higher end and offers full home-from-home facilities including kitchen, dining room and multiple bedrooms.
- Timothy Beach Resort: a smaller resort than the first two but its location does all the heavy lifting for its popularity. Sitting on Frigate Bay Beach you’ll have direct access to a private area on the Caribbean coast daily. The property does also have its own pool and rooms are spacious and traditionally designed. Timothy Beach Resort is also right next to the popular strip for lively nights out with the locals.
Frigate Bay offers a solid base from which to explore. It’s approximately a 10-15 minutes drive from the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport and offers everything you’ll need during your week away – beach access, the Royal St Kitts Golf Course, lively nightlife, and you have access to every part of the island within a reasonable drive.

Where to eat and drink
For a true taste of St Kitts, you need to visit the strip for local atmosphere and traditional food. I’ve visited several bars along there and always had so much fun. I’ve found it to be a safe area for visitors. I’ve travelled for work with female-only groups in the main, and you’ll get a great feel for the island and its locals. As with any destination, common sense must prevail, so if something does feel unsafe, don’t do it.
Alongside the strip, add a visit to Sprat Net Bar & Grill, which is locally loved and a true taste of the island – my Sprat Net review is here.
There’s also a really lovely lunch spot at the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, which opened in 2025. I didn’t get to try it myself, but it’s on my list for next time and the excitement around its opening was huge. You can eat indoors or outside on the terrace and the views across the island are stunning.

What to do
- Get out on the water. A catamaran sail along the coast with a swim stop is great fun and it’s a great way to get a different perspective on the island.
- Visit Old Road Rum Distillery. You get insight into the island’s history and its rum-making, plus a rum tasting including some of its oldest aged rum.
- Take the sugar train railroad. A nice few hours that covers much of the island. You’ll experience the island and take in stunning views along this railroad.
- ATV jungle tour. For a taste of adventurous St Kitts head into the jungle on a quad bike and explore some of the island’s most remote trails under the expert gaze of local guides.
- Hike Mount Liamuiga. Active travellers will love exploring the rainforest on a hike to the volcano’s crater rim and St Kitts’ highest point.
- Day trip to Nevis. I’d definitely recommend it, especially if you can fit in a couple of nights on the island itself. If you can afford a couple more nights off work, stay in Nevis too.

When to go
High season covers the UK’s winter months. It’s a popular time to travel for the best weather, but prices are higher. I travelled in May and the climate was perfect, so it’s worth considering travelling outside of the busier months.

My tips for first-timers
- Embrace island time. It’s the best way to truly relax.
- Base yourself in Frigate Bay and explore from there.
- Stay in St Kitts for a minimum of seven nights, ten nights if you can.
- Add Nevis. A day trip works, and a couple of nights is even better.
And a warning: St Kitts is addictive. Island life gets me every time I visit.
